KK Birla Foundation on Wednesday announced the name of noted Rajasthani poet Dr Arjundeo Charan for this year’s Bihari Puraskar.
Dr Charan will get the award for collection of his Rajasthani poems titled — Ghar Ek Nam Hai Bhrosai Rau. The award carries prize money of Rs1 lakh, a citation and a plaque.
Bihari Puraskar was instituted by the KK Birla Foundation in 1991.
Every year the award is given to an outstanding work in Hindi or Rajasthani published during the last ten years by a Rajasthani writer.
A seven-member panel select winner for the award. Professor Nand Kishore Acharya, former professor of Rampuria College, Bikaner is the present chairman of the selection panel.
Born on 10 May 1954, Dr Charan belongs to Jodhpur district of Rajasthan.
He has written and directed over twenty plays in Hindi and Rajasthani.
The central theme of his poems have been the sorry state and the constant struggles faced by women in an irrationally feudal society.
As a director and theatre person he has received national acclaim for writing modern Rajasthani plays and staging them also.
At present, Dr Charan is the head of Rajasthani Bhasha Department at Jayanarayan University, Jodhpur.
Among his widely known works include Dharamjuddh, Mugatigatha, Bagat Ri Baarkhadi and Jaatra.
His works have been translated into Urdu and other Indian languages.
Dr Charan has also bagged the coveted Sahitya Akademi Award.
