Family members of Mohammad Ahmad Kazmi (50), a freelance journalist who was arrested on March 7, have raised questions over the functioning of Delhi Police’s special cell.
A relative of the journalist said the additional DCP heading the probe is himself facing a vigilance inquiry and is currently posted at PM security, which is considered a punishment posting.
“How can they form a special team headed by a person who was transferred after his name cropped up in a vigilance enquiry. This team fabricates evidences and most persons they arrested in the past have walked out free later,” the relative claimed.
According to sources, the officer was found involved in a corruption case when he was posted as the assistant commissioner of police in Mehrauli. A vigilance inquiry was initiated against him and he was immediately transferred. Delhi government had also ordered a probe against him for his involvement in a six-year-old fake encounter case.
“We have examples of officers like Rajbeer Singh, who was assistant commissioner of police in the special cell and known for fake encounters. He was killed by a property dealer in Gurgaon and had allegations of extortion against him. How can we trust a team known for having officers like him?” said Sukumar Muralidharan, a journalist.
Kazmi’s relatives and senior journalists claimed that police are planting stories to make their position strong.
“We should avoid the media trial. You don’t pick up what Delhi police tells you. Kazmi is a responsible journalist and the community should respect him for the work he has done,” said a senior journalist, during a press meet today. Journalists supporting Kazmi have demanded his unconditional release.
“Since the case involves two countries, either the NIA or CBI should have been entrusted with the task. Special cell has a record of fabricating evidences,” said ND Pancholi, a senior advocate.
