At Jamia, students clicked before exams

All those who were planning to pull off a Munnabhai-MBBS stunt, by getting a proxy to take the entrances at Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI), it’s time for a rethink.
All candidates who go to the university to appear for the entrance exams are being photographed with their names and roll numbers.
At the same time, if a student has not appeared for the exam, the varsity photographs an empty desk with the roll number.
Jamia officials said this method helped nail 200 students in an impersonation case two years back.
“This process was started two years ago and it proved very effective because we have caught several cases of impersonation by students,” said Khalid Moin, dean faculty of engineering, JMI. “Sometimes the candidate would send someone as a proxy to take a entrance test for them and then the candidate would come and take admission. Such cases have nearly stopped because of this,” he said.
Hoodwinking the system, officials claimed, has now become next to impossible with photo identification and documentation happening at two levels of the entrance and admission process.
“This method is absolutely fool-proof. We click the candidate once at the time of the entrance test and the second time during the first semester examinations. This is because several times even though the candidate may have taken admission, a proxy could come in to write the exams. So we match the photographs on the admit card with the ones taken during the entrance test and then during the first semester exam,” Moin added.
If a student alleged later through an RTI that they had been marked absent by the university, this technique proved helpful in substantiating the university’s response, the officials said.
“If a student files an RTI saying that he or she was absent then in response to that RTI, we furnish the photograph clicked at the time of the entrance exam along with the attendance sheet as proof of the student’s presence,” said SM Sajid, registrar, JMI.
