An auto-rickshaw driver was killed and two of passengers travelling with him were injured after a speeding truck rammed into the vehicle on central Delhi’s Old ITO Bridge early on Sunday morning, the police said.
The accident occurred when the auto driver, Jagdish Mehto, a resident of Bihar’s Muzaffarpur, was heading from Laxmi Nagar to Shadipur at 2:25am.
“The victim picked up his passengers from Laxmi Nagar and was taking them to Shadipur through Vikas Marg when the truck, which was coming from the Sarai Kale Khan side, rammed his auto from the left side,” said a police officer.
According to the police, the impact of the hit was such that the auto underwent two revolutions before coming to a stop some metres away. While the passengers were pulled out of the remains of the auto, the driver is suspected to have died due to the impact.
“Some documents, which contain victim’s address but not his name, were recovered from his possession. He is yet to be identified,” the officer said.
“The truck driver, identified as Anil Yadav, is a resident of northwest Delhi’s Sultanpuri and was arrested from the spot,” the officer added.
