The auto expo on Saturday drew a leaner crowd than the one on Friday that had led to comparisons with the Kumbh Mela. But despite the sharp drop in footfall, the chaos at the Pragati Maidan venue continued.
The 55,000 visitors who turned up — against a cap of 70,000 — overran the display halls set up by car companies. Entry to several halls had to be closed for some time.
On Friday, despite it being a business day, 80,000 visitors flooded the auto expo against an entry cap of 50,000, a senior police officer said.
Sunday could be worse as the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the organiser, expects a full house. "Some people may have stayed back on Saturday due to the bad press from Friday but we believe they will turn up on Sunday and it will be a full house," said Virendra Gupta, head, trade fair, CII.
"The crowd movement plan doesn’t seem proper. Also, visitors are spending too much time at each enclosure, leading to congestion. The organisers should have planned it better. This event is worse than the recently concluded trade fair," the officer said.
The CII is considering shifting the show out of central Delhi.
