Think twice before buying a second-hand luxury car from unauthorised car dealers, as there are chances that you might end up buying a stolen vehicle.
The crime branch of the Delhi Police has busted an interstate gang of auto lifters, who purchased insured vehicles under a ‘total loss’ scheme and used their registration number plates for selling stolen vehicles.
The police arrested three members of the gang identified as Mohammad Iliyas, Rajbeer Singh and Mohammad Nadeem. Eleven luxury cars have been recovered from the arrested auto lifters. Three other members of the gang, Bitto, Imran and Ajay, are still on the run, police said on Sunday.
The gang used to steal luxury cars and sell them after tampering with the engine/chassis numbers and replacing their registration number plates with number plates of insured vehicles, which they purchased under a ‘total loss’ scheme.
Ravindra Yadav, additional CP (crime), said Bittoo and Ajay used to steal vehicles of the same make, model and colour of which they had original documents of the total loss vehicles of insurance companies, which were supplied by Nadeem.
The arrests, Yadav said, were made following investigation into information about the illegal activities of the gang.
A team of anti-auto theft squad (AATS) under the supervision of Bhisham Singh, additional DCP (crime), was formed to develop the information and catch the members of the gang.
“The team first arrested Mohammad Iliyas from near a mall in Anand Vihar area. He was arrested with a stolen Tata Indigo car which he was driving. The number plate of the car was found to be fake and the car was had been stolen from Madhu Vihar area,” said Yadav.
During interrogation, Yadav said, Iliyas disclosed that he along with his associates Bittoo, Nadeem and Ajay had stolen several vehicles from Delhi and Gurgaon. He said he had sold several stolen vehicles to Rajbeer Singh.
“Singh was arrested from Mayapuri area. He is a junk dealer and receives stolen vehicles. Iliyas’s associate Nadeem was also arrested and documents of several vehicles were recovered from him,” added Yadav.
“Singh dismantled the purchased vehicles at his shop in Mayapuri and used to keep their documents with him instead of depositing them with the transport authority,” Yadav said.
