The 10,000-odd three-wheelers that were barred from plying in the Capital by the transport department for not having 'smart card-based permits' have got a fresh lease of life.
Giving a 45-day moratorium, the department on Monday asked the operators of these autorickshaws to get their permits converted into smart cards. To make things easier for the operators, the department has also agreed to transfer permits in their names if they manage to produce valid sale deeds of the vehicles.
In an attempt to maintain proper records of ownership and drivers of 55,000 three-wheelers in the capital, the transport department had directed the three-wheeler operators to switch to smart card based permits.
Despite several extended deadlines, the operators of 10,491 three-wheelers had failed to apply for smart cards.
Suspending permits of these vehicles, the transport department had started the process of their cancellation.
But the three-wheeler unions had threatened to go on an indefinite strike. So the transport department has decided to give erring operators one last chance.
"Those operators who bought permits from financier mafia and original permit holders who were are not known had failed to apply for smart cards. Even if the original permit holders are not available, we will still transfer the permits and issue smart cards if the current operators have sale deed of the vehicles with them," a transport department official said.
