A constable posted at the Jaffrabad police station was shot dead by two assailants in the Maujpur area of northeast Delhi on Saturday afternoon.

The incident comes two months after the murder of a 44-year-old constable posted at the same police station.

Dharampal, 26, who was posted as beat constable in Maujpur area, was about to leave the area on his bike, when two men wearing helmets, came from behind and fired two shots at him.

“He was posted there about a month ago and had gone to visit a cloth merchant at 12:30pm. After coming out of the shop, he was starting his bike when two men reached there and fired at him point blank,” said a senior police officer. One of the bullets hit him in the head and he collapsed immediately. The attackers took away the constable’s gun.

A native of Hapur in UP, Dharampal was posted in the northeast district since 2011 and as per his routine was visiting shops in markets when the incident took place. Eyewitnesses called the police who rushed Dharampal to GTB hospital. But doctors there declared him dead on arrival.

“It is a planned murder. The assailants were waiting for him to come out of the shop. Both of them were wearing helmets. It appears to be a case of personal enmity but we are probing the matter from all possible angles,” the officer said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem.

“We have some CCTV footage from a nearby shop but it is not clear. The assailants were aware of the narrow lanes and the surrounding areas,” the officer said.
