Beauty and bins? What an idea, MCD

Yet another fanciful idea has caught the attention of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
As part of its preparations for Commonwealth Games 2010, the civic agency is planning to install garbage bins-cum-flower pots to deal with the problem of littering and provide aesthetic appeal.
According to the civic agency, this innovative concept would encourage people to use the bins. The bin will look like a flower vase and the pots will be installed on dustbins, which will be open from the front to throw garbage inside.
“These pots will be placed in markets, schools, religious places, bus stops, and the 2,500 notified stretches that are being improved keeping the Games in view. The idea is to encourage people to use these bins while they also look attractive,” said MCD commissioner K.S. Mehra.
Tenders have already been floated for the same. The civic body claimed this idea would be unique to the MCD area. The cost of the project is yet to be worked out and the MCD is preparing estimates.
“A decision was taken to install these dustbins because they will provide a greener look to Delhi during the Games,” said a senior MCD official. These dustbins would be placed at a distance of 150 metres from each other.
The civic body has been constantly facing public ire for not providing adequate bins in residential colonies.
Earlier, after the Delhi blasts when explosives had been placed in some garbage bins, the civic body had come up with an idea to provide transparent bins.
