In a daring case of daylight snatching, two motorcycle-borne assailants snatched a bag containing Rs 7 lakh from an employee of a private firm in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh on Monday afternoon.
The incident took place outside the Gurudwara Road, Karol Bagh branch of HDFC Bank.
The incident occurred despite Delhi being on high alert following the High Court bomb blast and the third anniversary of Batla House encounter.
Police sources said the CCTV cameras installed at the bank were not working and this suggested that the snatchers had performed a complete reconnaissance of the area.
According to a senior police officer, the victim, Ramji is an employee in a private firm and was going to deliver the money to someone when the incident took place a few meters away from the bank.
“Ramji’s employer had given him Rs 2 lakh in cash and a cheque of R5 lakh. He was supposed to hand the money over to a party after encashing the cheque in the bank,” said the officer.
Ramji had stepped out of the bank and was walking on the street when two men on a Pulsar motorcycle snatched the bag from him. He immediately made a PCR call. “We have registered a case and are looking into it,” the officer added.
In a separate case, a security guard of a Punjab National Bank ATM located in Indira Vikas Colony area in Mukharjee Nagar, allegedly tampered with the ATM machine and fled with cash amounting to Rs 15 lakh.
