A number of people were injured on Saturday in a clash between Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) volunteers and BJP workers following a debate show on a Hindi television channel. The clash broke out in Tughlakabad area of south Delhi.
According to sources, workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party pushed each other and pelted stones. Both parties accused each other of abusing and using derogatory remarks. The vehicle of an AAP candidate was also torched.
Police immediately cordoned off the area, while a few injured persons were admitted to a nearby hospital.
The police were yet to receive a written complaint from either of the parties till late on Saturday night. “We will register cases based on the complaint from both sides. Let us first receive their complaint,” said Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deepak Mishra.
A statement from AAP said that it condemned the “murderous attack on its volunteers in Tuglakabad by the family and hired goons of BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri”. They alleged that BJP workers also burnt the vehicle of AAP candidate Sahi Ram.
The BJP blamed the AAP for the violence. It said a number of BJP workers were seriously injured. “They were admitted to hospital by the police. We strongly condemn the violence by AAP workers and the negative acts in they are indulging for quite some time,”said a BJP spokesperson.
The AAP countered. “The violence unleashed by BJP on AAP volunteers is a clear indication that it wants to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere in Delhi ahead of the assembly elections. It is shocking that a mob led by the BJP MP’s nephew attacked AAP volunteers in broad daylight when a TV news channel was conducting a debate in Tuglakabad. “Armed with sharp weapons, they attacked the AAP volunteers, who were participating in the TV programme and inflicted serious injuries on them without any provocation,” an AAP spokesperson said.
The AAP criticised Delhi Police for asking them to register an FIR. The BJP, however, alleged that the AAP volunteers torched the car themselves and blamed the party.
