BJP members in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) passed a motion during the Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday, condemning the Congress ruled Delhi government for using water cannons to crush their agitation against price rise.
As the meeting began, BJP members took up the issue of use of water cannons by the Delhi Fire Service during Monday’s protest rally by BJP councillors from Lancer Road to the Delhi Assembly.
“There are hundreds of protests/demonstrations held at Jantar Mantar regularly but nobody uses water cannons there. It is clear that (Delhi CM) Sheila Dikshit tried to stop our rally though the use of water cannons,” Subhash Arya, Leader of the MCD House said.
A resolution condemning the way BJP’s democratic protest was crushed was passed soon after, amidst sloganeering by members.
Standing Committee chairman Ram Kishen Singhal had fractured his right shoulder on Monday when police used water cannons to disperse the rally. Singhal underwent a surgery at a local hospital for the broken shoulder and was discharged from the ICU only in the evening, Arya said.
Eight other councillors and BJP workers were also injured when police prevented agitators from entering assembly premises using water cannons.
Mayor Dr Kanwar Sain had, on Tuesday, written to Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal, asking him to probe the incident thoroughly.
Sain had also demanded a probe into the use of water cannons to stop the BJP rally.
