In a matter of minutes, a muggy day turned into a cool, breezy evening as a sudden rain drenched Delhi and quelled the summer heat on Friday.
Starting with a muggy 29 degrees Celsius at dawn, the mercury went up to 41 degrees Celsius by afternoon.
But cool, brisk winds drove in the dark clouds and by 6 p.m. it had started raining. Some parts of the Capital, like India Gate, received hail as well, adding to the cool.
It was the effect of a passing rain-bearing system called Western Disturbance, the weatherman said.
Right after the rain, the mercury dropped to a relatively comfortable 34 degrees Celsius from 41, the official said.
“It was really bad the whole day with the sun in full glare,” said Aruna Kumar (42), a housewife shopping in Connaught Place.
“It was a welcome relief although my friends and I got drenched a bit because we did not have umbrellas.”
The good news is that the weatherman has predicted a similar day on Sunday.
“While the temperatures may remain the same, there are chances of thunderstorms with cloudy sky,” the Met official said.
