Two boys were found murdered inside their house in the Jahangirpuri area of northwest Delhi on Monday evening.

The police said the tenant, who has been missing since the incident happened, might have a role in the murder. The bodies of the brothers were found hidden below the bed of Ashok Kumar, 24, the tenant. The victims have been identified as Suraj, 7, and Gopal, 5.

“Their mother, Phool Kumari, returned from the market at around 12 noon. She saw Ashok going outside and asked him about her kids. When he didn’t reply, she went upstairs to look for them,” said a senior police officer while requesting anonymity.

After the family were not able to locate the children, a missing complaint was filed with the local police station at around 3:30 pm.

“I sneaked into Ashok’s room and saw something under his bed. We broke open the door and found Suraj and Gopal lying there,” said Sangeeta, the victims’ elder sister.

Both were rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared them brought dead. The father of the deceased— Raja Ram — works as a driver. Initial investigation suggests that the boys were strangulated to death.

“Ashok was living on rent with us for the past seven years. I can’t understand why would he kill my sons. We never had any fight with him,” Raja Ram said.

Ashok used to eat with the family but the past two days he didn’t have food with us.

“He had a fight with Phool Kumari a few days ago after which he was not talking to the family. We are probing the case from all possible angles,” said a senior police officer.

The house where Raja Ram is living belonged to his father-in-law.

Police said that Ashok took all his documents with him before leaving the house.

“Ashok belongs to Bihar and his relatives live in Delhi. We have detained two persons and are questioning them about his whereabouts,” the officer added.

Ashok had recently submitted his documents to get a UID number, which could prove crucial in the investigation. A case of murder has been registered at the Jahangirpuri Police Station and further investigations are on.
