Breakfast joints worth waking up to in South Delhi

Be it a quick bite before rushing off to work or a lazy Sunday brunch with family, these eateries ensure you have a delicious, hearty start to the day

Kadimi, a small eatery in Bhogal, is a favourite among locals for its breakfast fare, especially chhole-kulche.

For years, we have been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You can be a college student or a professional, a healthy meal will help you last all day. We visited a few spots in South Delhi where you can a enjoy yummy breakfast, without breaking the bank.

Tried and tested

Every morning, residents of Jangpura, Bhogal and Nizamuddin throng a small eatery in Bhogal. Even though there is not enough space here, people don’t mind standing on the road and wait patiently for their turn. Kadimi is a favourite among locals for its breakfast fare, especially chhole-kulche, which is one of the most popular items on the menu card.

Be it office-goers, students or migrants living in the locality, customers reach this 80-year-old food outlet at 7am. Apart from the lip-smacking chhole-kulche, Kadimi offers several other breakfast options which draw people from other localities as well. Their bhaji (thick potato and dal mangodi curry) served with crispy puri is much in demand.

PB Mehta, 42, is a regular customer and makes it a point to come here at least thrice a week. “Most of my friends, including me, live alone in Delhi because of work. It is important to start the day with a good, filling breakfast and Kadimi serves this purpose. Their chhole-kulche are excellent and affordable,” he said.

Bhogal is a popular locality of south Delhi, known for affordable breakfast options. Apart from chhole-kulche, available for just Rs 30, other popular breakfast items are kachoris (Rs 30) and samosas (Rs 12-20). Kachoris are made with different stuffings such as urad dal and peas. People can wash it all down with a refreshing glass of sweet lassi which costs just Rs 40.

Meet, greet and eat

For those who are early risers and enjoy a perfect plate of puri-bhaji, a visit to Zakir Nagar is a must. The main road is brimming with small food outlets serving the local savoury dish. A few outlets start as early as 8am and many serve the dish along with piping hot suji halwa.

“These eateries have become a regular meeting point for many people. There is no place to sit inside by 10am, so a queue starts forming outside soon. I come here daily with my friends.

All of us live in nearby PG accommodations. We discuss college and studies over a plate of tasty puri-bhaji!” said Yusuf Hashmi, 24, a student living in Batla House.

For the love of Kachoris

East of Kailash is the place to go to if you like to indulge in kachoris, cool drinks and kulfis. At sharp 10am, students and office-goers start queuing up in front of Sapna Kachori Wala at the Community Centre. The khasta kachoris stuffed with urad dal are a favourite among locals, who have been coming here ever since the outlet opened in 1994.

“We have grown up eating kachoris here. It is good in taste and quite affordable. The small group of people running the outlet is very friendly. This has become a popular breakfast point not only among locals but also outsiders,” said Karan Aggarwal, a resident of East of Kailash.

When customers are done eating kachoris, most of them order lassi or kulfi at another popular outlet nearby. A red signboard announces ‘Netrapal Kulfi’. The outlet, which has been named after the owner Netrapal Sahu, came up in 1981.

“Initially, we only sold kulfi. That was the time when our regular customers consisted of children and their parents. Later, when the number of visitors grew, we decided to make lassi as well. It proved to be a bigger success. Nowadays, many people come here to quench their thirst with a glass of lassi,” said 45-year-old Sahu.
