Five people, including a business graduate, were arrested for their alleged involvement in operating an interstate gunrunning racket, police said Wednesday. A huge cache of country-made weapons and live ammunition were recovered from their possession.
Deepak Kumar, a BBA graduate, Mohammad Sadiq, Mukesh, Ravi Kumar and Vipin were arrested on a specific input while they were driving through west Delhi's Moti Nagar, V Renganathan, additional CP (west), said.
"We received information that a gang, which is into both the production and distribution of illegal country-made ammunition, would pass through the district in a car. A trap was laid in the Tilak Nagar area and the gang, travelling in a Scorpio car, was arrested," Renganathan said.
According to police, 21 country-made pistols and 25 live cartridges were recovered from the five men travelling in the car.
During interrogation, police said, Deepak Kumar admitted that he took to the business after coming in touch with some 'bad elements' operating in the capital.
"He was put-up to it by one of his associates in adjacent UP and started supplying the said weapons and ammunition to criminal elements in the city; 21 country made pistols, 25 live cartridges and a vehicle used by them have been recovered," Renganathan added.
According to police, Deepak Kumar, who holds a bachelor's degree in business administration, was 'inspired' by a youth politician with a criminal background in UP. "Kumar had initially wanted to join politics but ended-up becoming a carrier of arms for his mentor," said a senior police officer.
Police claimed that the gang had admitted to having previously supplied arms and ammunition several times to many notorious criminal gangs based both in the capital as well as UP as per the demands of the latter.
