A 32-year-old businessman was strangulated and stabbed 17 times at his house in Rajouri Garden in West Delhi in the early hours of Thursday. Sumit Kaur Kohli (30), the estranged wife of the deceased, told the police that four men killed her husband Jagmohan Singh Kohli. She is the lone eyewitness to the murder.
Though no arrests have been made in this case, police suspect extra-marital affair as the reason behind the murder. They have detained the wife and six other people for questioning.
Kohli’s wife told the police that the men killed her husband following a row over some money he owed them. But the police said there were loopholes in her statement. Police said one of the detained men is the wife's boyfriend and he is being questioned. Police have ruled out robbery as the motive as the house was not ransacked after the murder and nothing is missing.
Kohli’s wife had left him and had gone to stay with her parents four months ago. She had also taken their children Jasleen (8) and Raunak (6) with her. The deceased, owner of a motor parts shop in Anand Parbat, was staying alone at his house in G-16 Block.
On Wednesday, his wife came back around 8:00 pm after the couple had reportedly reconciled their differences.
“She said around 2:00 am four assailants came to their house. They had used a duplicate key to open the main door. They entered their bedroom and asked her husband for Rs 4 lakh which he owed them,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Sharad Aggarwal.
“She told the police that when her husband refused to pay up, they tied her up and allegedly strangulated and stabbed him repeatedly,” the DCP said.
Kohli’s family members have alleged that his wife killed her husband along with her lover for property.
Ajit Singh, cousin of the victim, said Kohli’s wife, who was living separately for the past four months apparently due to a marital dispute, had returned to Kohli’s residence on the night of the murder. He said she had purposely not brought her children along.
“She must have returned with a plan to eliminate him. How could it be possible that the criminals who killed her husband did not kill her despite the fact that she was the sole eyewitness?” the cousin said.
“She has a share of 50 per cent in Jagmohan’s property and wanted to settle down with her lover.”
Police said Kohli’s wife did not alert the neighbours first. She went to her father’s house in J Block to call the police.
“Also the way the men reportedly entered the house is doubtful. There are a few unanswered questions like that,” the DCP said.
