The spot where the rape victim was abducted from is one of the busiest in Sultanpuri. Locals allege that even though it is a bustling market, there is no police presence in the vicinity.
In a sorry commentary on the safety of women in Delhi, the incident took place in an area that falls under the jurisdiction of a woman cop, deputy commissioner of police, Chaya Sharma and a woman Member of Parliament Krishna Tirath.
However, a day after the incident was reported, there was no policeman posted at the spot.
"The market stays open till 11 pm. Police patrolling is nil here. We are amazed how the accused managed to pull her inside the car and flee," said Vikas Goel, a shopkeeper.
"We keep hearing about incidents in our neighbourhood in Mongolpuri where girls walking alone are attacked by men on motorcycle with blades. It is shocking that a girl from our area, which is so crowded was abducted," said Goldie, a local.
Police however claimed that they had stepped up vigil in the area in wake of the incident and had also intensified foot patrolling.
"They were on a joyride and were consuming alcohol when the incident took place. They held the victim captive for two hours, even though we had launched a massive hunt for them," said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity..
Special team for Mongolpuri blade slashers Police said they had deployed additional men to look for the two men wanted for attacking three women with a “nail filer” on Saturday night.
"We have launched a special drive and have even roped in 10 traffic policemen to help us nab the accused. On Sunday night alone, we detained 255 bikes on grounds of suspicion," said Chaya Sharma, DCP (outer). Sharma added that it seemed more of a copycat act.
Earlier, police had arrested two men, one of them a spurned lover, who had attacked five women with a surgical blade.
