The Cabinet on Monday gave its nod to the setting up of societies to run six AIIMS-like institutions at a cost of Rs 823 crore each.
In 2006, the Cabinet had announced the setting up of six AIIMS-like institutions in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand to provide affordable hi-end treatment and medical education in under-served states.
These societies will run the institutes being set up under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana till they are brought under an Act.
Each of these institutions will be registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, "This is an interim arrangement till the Bill is passed. The societies will be legal entities that will ensure greater autonomy and faster execution of the projects," said a health ministry official.
Work on the institutes started in 2009.
"Hostel buildings are almost 90 per cent complete and medical colleges will be ready by October 2011..." he said.
