Candle-lit dinners, self-inflicted outages and TV in the dark — Delhiites are game for extreme action to save electricity. This summer the city’s power distributors asked consumers the length they were willing to go to save electricity. Gauging from response, quite some distance it seems.
“Once every month we should switch off all lights and have dinner in candle light. This will be fun for the family,” says N Watal, a resident of IP Extension. There is more.
Watch TV in the dark. It will be “a theatre-like experience at home”.
Emails and online entries — consumers have let it flow. Paschim Vihar resident H Sundara Rajan wants everyone to go for a morning walk. It will give “electricial appliances some rest”.
Dry the washing in the sun and save electricity on dryers. There are useful tips too. Remove mobile chargers from sockets when not in use, whitewash terraces to deflect sunlight and use solar panels to light the streets.
The discoms are compiling all such practical ideas into a document, which will be circulated.
“Many ideas are practicable, and we’ll reward them,” said Ramesh Narayanan, CEO of BSES Yamuna which along with BSES Rajdhani has initiated the programme for the 28 lakh households they serve.
Winning entry will earn the sender free sun-control films for home windows.
