A school where more than half of the students are toppers!
Believe it or not, but according to the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE), schools are doing so well that it is possible for 60% of all class 10 students to get a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 10.
At Sachdeva Public School, Rohini, 210 out of 330 students have scored a perfect 10 in the class 10 examinations. This is the highest in the city. At DPS, RK Puram, 148 students out of 591 have scored a perfect 10.
But, according to experts, it is not that students have become brilliant over the years.
The reason for this bizarre result is the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system. The system asks schools to rate students continuously on the basis of projects, tests and extra-curricular activity.
Two examinations, SA (I) and SA (II) are also conducted in a year. Schools mark their students and CBSE may just ask a school to send some copies as a mechanism against unfair marking.
“What has happened is that schools are now inflating marks to make sure that their market worth increases. Quality and checks and balances have gone down the drain because of CCE,” said a CBSE official on condition of anonymity.
The situation in government schools, that face the flak of the authorities if the results are not good, seems more believable.
At Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya (RPVV), Nand Nagri, 15 out of 104 students has a CGPA of 10. At RPVV, Sector 10, Dwarka, 13 out of 66 students have scored 10.
“The CCE is a learning process. When excess freedom is given to institutions, maturity and experience are needed. Both, schools and the board are in the growing-up process, which may take some time,” said Anuradha Joshi, principal, Sardar Patel Vidyalaya.
