The astonishing victory of India over Pakistan in an Asia Cup tie on Sunday provided a reason for some young men to create ruckus in south Delhi. The casualty was a Delhi Police head constable.
Head constable Brahamanand Sharma, 42, was on a patrol on his bike on Sunday night when he found some youth creating nuisance on the road at Madrasi Colony in Mandangir area.
They had been celebrating India’s win in the One Day match against Pakistan. The youth had blocked the road for traffic.
“Sharma intervened and asked them to leave the road. But as soon as he left the place, the youth started pelting stones at him. One of the stones hit Sharma’s head and he fell unconscious. In the meantime, some other police officers reached the spot and rushed Sharma to the hospital,” said a senior officer.
He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where doctors attending on him described his condition as critical.
Sharma is attached to the Ambedkar Nagar police station.
The police have arrested one Venkatesh and have identified him as the person who had thrown the stone at Sharma. A case had already been registered in this regard.
Sharma’s son, Sonu, said, “We got a call from the Ambedkar Nagar police station in the night. My father’s colleagues told us that he got injured while trying to stop some hooligans who were celebrating India’s victory against Pakistan.”
“They attacked my father with stones. The culprits should be given befitting punishment for assaulting an officer of the law,” Sonu added.
