The UPA government on Friday slammed the Gujarat government in its affidavit in the Supreme Court for challenging its scheme to provide scholarships to pre-matric students from the minority communities.
Gujarat has moved the SC against the Centre’s scheme which came into effect in 2008. It is the only state that has not implemented the scheme. An attempt by the Modi government to get it quashed failed after the Gujarat High Court on February 20 this year upheld the scheme. “The claim that minorities in Gujarat are far more developed than in other states of the country is entirely without basis,” stated the Centre’s affidavit, filed by the ministry of minority affairs.
Quoting extensively from the Sachar Committee report the affidavit held that poverty among Muslims in Gujarat was higher than the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes there. “Gujarat also fares particularly poorly in terms of mean per capita expenditure of the Muslim community,” it added.
There were no Muslim beneficiaries in the self help group programme and not a single below poverty line (BPL) card was issued to them, the Centre claimed.
