The Delhi Police on Sunday arrested eight persons for allegedly carrying out a heist at a jewellery shop in Chandigarh on January 12. The police have also recovered gold and diamond ornaments worth R12 crore from their possession.
“Eight men have been arrested by a joint team of Delhi Police and their Chandigarh counterparts within 72 hours of the heist. This is a classic example of perfect coordination between the two forces,” Delhi Police Commissioner B K Gupta said. Chandigarh Inspector General (IG) P Srivastava was also present on the occasion.
According to the police, the 12-member gang used to wear police uniforms and carry out robberies.
While two of the accused are Class XI students, another is a yoga teacher and conductor while the remaining two run a transportation business in Ghaziabad’s Vaishali area.
“The arrested have been identified as Paras Soni (26), who is the mastermind, his brother Manav Soni (24), Bhura Qureshi (28), Upender Singh (19), Anuj Kumar (21), Ajay Singh (24), Bhura Tomar (18) and Sonu Raghav (19).
Four of their accomplices, Ali Raja, Umar Duraj, Satinder and Nadeem are still on the run,” said a senior Delhi Police officer.
The police said the gang was involved in robberies at Tanishq showroom in Chandigarh’s Manimajra area on January 12 and a showroom in Haryana’s Kundli city on January 3 in which the gang had fled with as many as 1,000 cell phone sets worth more than R1 crore.
“Soon after the heist at Chandigarh, we got inputs that the gang was headed towards Delhi. We informed the Delhi Police and with their help, we managed to arrest eight
men,” Srivastava said adding that none of the accused were residents of Delhi or Chandigarh.
“Five gang members wore uniforms of the UP Police and introduced themselves as members of the Special Staff of the Panchkula police. They threatened the guards and forced them to take them to the rear of the showroom where they were beaten up and gagged. They were also forced to take sedatives,” the officer said.
The police said the gang then broke open the showroom and ransacked the shop unaware that they were being caught on the CCTV cameras.
“The first breakthrough in the case came with the arrest of Bhura Qureshi from near PVR Priya in Vasant Vihar. He spilled the beans
on the Soni brothers who were arrested from Uttar Pradesh's Vaishali area and the booty, R2.5 lakh that they had got after selling some jewellery and 1,000 cell phones were recovered from their house,” the officer added.
The police said Upender Singh, Anuj Kumar, Ajay Singh, Bhura Tomar, and Sonu Raghav, were arrested at the arrested trio’s instance from Pilkhua in UP on Sunday morning.
