Traders of Chandni Chowk on Thursday took out a drive to clear the footpaths of the market of hawkers and squatters.
According to Sanjay Bhargava, general secretary, Chandni Chowk sarv vypar mandal, they managed to remove 10 to 15 hawkers who were selling eatables, clothes and shoes on the streets. He added that the rest of the illegal squatters ran away after they witnessed the drive coming towards them.
The mandal started the drive to implement court orders, banning illegal hawking on the footpaths of Chandni Chowk since it chokes the path and leads to congestion. Traders say that they will continue holding the drive on a regular basis.
"Court's order clearly says that it is a no-hawking zone and yet the administration and the police is making a mockery of it by not implementing it," said Bhargava.
