Delhi Police filed the chargesheet against six IM operatives in the Jama Masjid shootout and blast case on Friday, the day when one of the accused, Mohammad Qateel Siddiqui, was found killed in a Pune jail.
The chargesheet also mentioned the name of IM India chief Yaseen Bhatkal alias Shahrukh, as police claimed that he had gone to Jama Masjid to plant a bomb in the car.Six IM members were arrested in November 2011 for their alleged involvement in Pune's German Bakery blast, Chinnaswami Stadium blasts and the Jama Masjid shooting and blast. The chargesheet is supported by the disclosure statements of all the arrested accused, which says that the intention behind the attack was to tarnish India's image ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
Sources said Siddiqui, along with a Pakistani national Mohammad Adil and other associates, had gone to Jama Masjid area on September 19, 2010.
"Siddiqui and Adil were on a bike, which Siddiqui was driving. Adil, who had received training in Pakistan, was a good marksman. Adil fired at a bus carrying Taiwanese tourists. Siddiqui was well aware of the topography of the area which helped them to escape," said a senior police officer.
Two tourists were injured in the attack. Three hours later, a bomb exploded in a car parked near gate number 3 of Jama Masjid. Irshad, among the arrested accused, had planted that bomb. Sources said Yaseen Bhatkal had also gone to Jama Masjid along with Irshad and two Pakistani nationals — Tabrez and Waqas.
"They were in two cars. They parked one car near the Jama Masjid and planted a bomb on it. They left on the other one," the officer added. Delhi police claimed that apart from Jama Masjid, IM members had conducted a recce of Pahar Ganj and Dilli Haat too. "They were looking for a crowded place, frequented by tourists. Since Siddiqui was aware of the Jama Masjid area quite well, as he lived in Nabi Karim, they decided to target that area," he added.
Police said Shahrukh plotted the attack on the directions of IM bosses — Riyaz Bhatkal and Iqbal Bhatkal, who are in Pakistan.
