From inspecting offices and attending inauguration of projects to taking part in a walkathon, many officials in Delhi had to skip their Christmas holiday and fall in line with the Centre's orders to observe Thursday as Good Governance Day.
While close to 300 officials of the Delhi education department participated in a walkathon for the Swachh Bharat Mission, commissioner of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) visited the Karol Bagh zone, inspecting the office and nearby areas.
Minister of state for power Piyush Goyal inaugurated an LED streetlight project at Malaviya Nagar, an event that was attended by the SDMC commissioner and other south corporation officers.
Staff at NDMC's zonal office of Rohini too observed Good Governance Day. Senior officials met at the office to discuss speedy disposal of public grievances. The NDMC headquarters, however, remained closed.
A senior official on condition of anonymity said, "It was a holiday for all but we had to attend a public function. Although it was symbolic, we had to go for work anyway." Union health
minister JP Nadda made a surprise inspection of the Safdarjung hospital as part of the Swachh Bharat drive.
At a packed Manekshaw Centre auditorium in New Delhi, new initiatives taken by the government were made public.
"There were many guests but some were government officials, particularly from the ministry of telecom and IT," said an official. He, however, said attendance was not compulsory.
There were also many, however, who did not work on Thursday.
Central ministries generally stayed closed as MPs - including ministers - had been asked to go to their respective constituencies and states on the day.
Some ministers were occupied in official programmes outside the Capital.
The road ministry worked on Christmas, but this was a routine meet to discuss policy issues, officials said.
Officials of the railway board were in Varanasi for a project inauguration.
