Chugging in to change your lives

It’s a small step for Delhi Metro, a giant leap for East Delhi. Delhi Metro’s Yamuna Bank station is opening today. You can now say goodbye to heat, traffic jams at ITO and by leaving your car home contribute to the environment, reports HT Correspondent.

It’s a small step for Delhi Metro, a giant leap for East Delhi.

With the launch of Yamuna Bank metro station on Sunday, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has added just one more station to its network. But the development promises to bring about a paradigm shift in the travel habits of almost 40 lakh trans-Yamuna commuters.

In December 2002 the DMRC had opened the Shahdara-Tis Hazari line in what was the first metro link to east Delhi.
The 2.1 km Indraprastha–Yamuna Bank section will now be an extension of the already operational 32.1-km Dwarka Sector 9 – Indraprastha Corridor (Line 3). Metro’s East Delhi foray would benefit a large population residing in the East Delhi colonies of Laxmi Nagar, Shakarpur, IP Extension, Mayur Vihar and Preet Vihar among others.

The new link is part of the Metro’s Indraprastha–Noida section, which is slated to open in October 2009. With this extension, the DMRC has added 2.1 km to its 75.5 km existing metro network and Yamuna Bank will be the 67th station on its map. By 2010, the DMRC would do two-and-a-half times the number of kilometres it does today. Before the Commonwealth Games, metro network will increase to 193.1 km and would have 137 stations on its map.

According to DMRC officials, an additional train will be run on Line 3 to cater to the increased number of passenger rush in this corridor. “This section is the most crowded with over 3.5 lakh passengers travelling every day. We have been running 29 trains on this line. This will be increased to 30 due to the increase in the number of passengers,” DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said.

The DMRC expects a footfall of about 15,000 passengers every day till the Noida and Anand Vihar ISBT sections are added to the network.

The opening of this section is likely to reduce the road traffic on the two important bridges — the Nizamuddin Bridge and the ITO Bridge connecting East Delhi with the rest of the city. Both bridges are major traffic bottlenecks, especially during peak hours.

To facilitate the movement of commuters, the DMRC has built a large parking lot at the Yamuna Bank station, which can accommodate up to 400 cars. The parking lot will also be operational from May 10. “We are also starting two feeder bus services from Yamuna Bank station. One feeder bus will cover Vikas Marg, New Patparganj Road, Mother Dairy, Mayur Vihar Phase-II (Pocket C), Kalyanpuri and Kondli before terminating at Mayur Vihar Phase III. The other feeder bus would run between Yamuna Bank and Jheel and will cover Shiv Puri, Rashid Market, Khureji, Shakarpur, Laxmi Nagar and Vikas Marg, Dayal said.

“One of the already existing feeder bus service from Shastri Park metro station to Vasundhra Enclave will also drop passengers about 800-mt from the metro station near Akshardham,” he added.

DMRC officials said feeder bus would be available ever 12-15 minutes during peak hours.
