They enter the city in excess of thousands everyday to ensure it has everything it needs.
During the Commonwealth Games, however, more than 15,000 commercial goods carrier vehicles that enter and exit the city everyday were not allowed to do so and this helped in reducing the total number of vehicles clogging Delhi roads.
“Their movement was highly regulated during the Games. Not only was there strict enforcement of traffic norms when they entered and exited the city borders but the 11 am to 5 pm window that is usually in force for them to move on the Ring Road and Outer Ring Road had been suspended,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).
Movement of goods carriers was completely suspended in northeast and east Delhi for the movement of athletes and delegates.
“However, they were allowed to enter and ply in limited areas of say west Delhi. This continued from September 30 to October 16 and majorly contributed to alleviating traffic problems in the city,” Garg said.
Though they play an integral part in the transportation of essential goods and services, many heavy goods carrier vehicles that enter the Capital
from neighbouring states such as Haryana, Uttar Pardesh and Rajasthan can be seen clogging arterial roads between 11 and 6 am.
“We were aware of the situation and that is why we ensured that enforcement be at its peak on these routes and their movement be regulated,” Garg added.
