Unable to clean the city on its own, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has asked Delhiites to do their bit in cleaning the city ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
The civic agency, with a voluntary organisation called Let's Do It Delhi, on Tuesday announced a 'Clean Delhi Challenge' for September 11.
It expects participation of community groups, educational institutions and corporate houses in a special sanitation campaign-cum-contest across the city on that day.
Mayor Prithvi Raj Sawhney said the initiative would be open to all organisations, RWAs, companies, colleges, NGOs and government departments.
"MCD workers will also be motivated to ensure zero garbage in the capital," he said.
Asked if announcing such a contest meant the civic agency had admitted its 'failure' in cleaning the city, with construction waste lying everywhere due to Games construction work, the Mayor said the MCD is doing its bit but "no municipality can fully tackle problems of insanitation without the citizen's cooperation".
For the September 11 challenge, participants will have choose a location of at least half a sq km, get their volunteers or hire cleaners while the litter collected will be lifted by the MCD later. The winners will be chosen zone-wise in 12 MCD zones by a panel of judges.
