The capital's drivers are evidently pushing the pedal to the metal beyond ridiculous limits. So much so, the driver of a swanky, new luxury sedan was caught speeding beyond the blinding speed of 133 kilometres per hour on his way to the airport last week.
A BMW, apparently owned by a leading mall in adjacent Gurgaon and bearing a Haryana number plate, was caught on one of the traffic police's recently installed infrared camera on the Northern Access Road last Monday and is in the process of being prosecuted for dangerous driving.
"The driver was apparently on his way to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport's Terminal 3 (T3) from the NSG roundabout and bore a VIP number plate. Its speed, at precisely 133.4 kmph, was gauged at close to three times the permissible limit," said a senior traffic police officer.
Police admitted to have stumbled upon the speed demon during a first-of-its-kind
drive against over-speeding on March 19.
They further claimed to have detected, and subsequently shot off over-speeding/dangerous driving fines to more than 800 drivers violating the speed limit on the same stretch in six hours.
With one fatal accident being reported per weekend over the last three weeks — resulting in the loss of at least half a dozen young lives — the traffic police are finally taking a break from patting their own backs for being able to reduce fatalities on Delhi streets every year.
“By April-end, we plan to have around a hundred such cameras installed across 10 locations in Delhi. While speeding beyond the permissible limit will attract a fine for over-speeding, going 20 km
beyond the limit will attract a court challan for dangerous driving,” said Satyendra Garg, joint CP (traffic).
