Work round the clock. That’s Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s direction to all the construction agencies involved in Commonwealth Games related projects.
Alarmed at the slow pace of work at some places, Dikshit asked the agencies to speed up work and hire more workers to ensure all construction was completed by August 31.
A day after Sheila Dikshit announced a month’s salary as bonus to the PWD engineers on the successful completion of the Games projects, she called a high level meeting of all construction agencies to review the progress. In the second such meeting in 10 days, each agency’s progress was discussed.
“I have instructed the agencies to deploy more manpower and work at night too wherever necessary. We have obtained permission from the police for that,” Dikshit said. “The final deadline has to be met.”
With the clock ticking away fast and a lot of work still pending, senior Delhi government officials said pressure was mounting and such meetings would become more frequent. The CM also asked the road building agencies to set up mobile teams to repair roads damaged by rain.
Apart from her cabinet colleagues and senior bureaucrats, the meeting was attended by MCD officials, as also officials from the NDMC, DJB, PWD, DDA, DMRC and NHAI among others. The CM said all digging should be over by July 31, debris removed by August 10 and construction finished by August 31. September has been reserved for trials, repair and greening.
A private agency has been hired to remove debris. “We have identified three locations in Delhi where the debris will be dumped,” she said.
Senior officials said the CM insisted on better coordination among all agencies to ensure there was no overlapping. The CM appointed Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta as the nodal officer for immediate redressal of problems between agencies.
“The CM stressed the need for proper streetlighting, signages and streetscaping. She instructed the PWD to concentrate on improvement and beautification of roads leading to the stadiums and practice venues. She has asked the agency to paint pedestrian ways and lane markings in accordance with the plan submitted by traffic police,” an official said.
