'Confer Bharat Ratna on Atal'

Senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to confer India's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee this Republic Day, and name the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) after him.

Recalling Vajpayee's "unique contribution" to public life, Sinha referred to an article by Professor Arvind Panagaria in a leading newspaper - calling for the honour to be conferred on Vajpayee.

"I am sure you will demonstrate the magnanimity and grace to give a great man his due," Sinha added.
