The BJP on Sunday came out in defence of social activist Anna Hazare and charged the Congress party with creating an “emergency-like situation” in the country by trying to muffle the voices against corruption.
The party president, Nitin Gadkari, said the conditions imposed on Hazare’s proposed indefinite fast was a “violation of fundamental rights”. He asked why the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was not intervening in the matter.
“There may be differences in opinions, but every one has a right to protest. The conditions on Hazare’s fast are a violation of our fundamental rights... This is an abuse of freedom of speech,” Gadkari said.
BJP spokesperson, Shahnawaz Hussain said the ruling party was creating an “emergency-like situation” by trying to muffle the voices against corruption...
“Congress and its government wants to muffle the voices of those who are speaking against corruption. They should not shoot the messenger,” Hussain said.
“The government had ordered a lathicharge on peaceful protesters at Ramlila Ground. It has also unleashed atrocities on BJP protesters last week. Congress’ attitude reminds us of the Emergency when the opposition voice was muffled. They had then called Jayprakash Narayan a fascist,” he said.
Gujarat chief minister, Narendra Modi also joined the debate.
He wrote on the microblogging site, Twitter :”PM tells Anna (Hazare) to go to police for any complaint... Disciplined behaviour is expected from Anna while to the officers of Gujarat police who are indulging in indiscipline, the message of the Congress government is — do not worry we will protect you.”
Hazare team member Kiran Bedi said the allegations of corruption levelled against him by the Congress betrayed its nervousness ahead of the activist’s proposed fast beginning on Tuesday.
“Such an allegation speaks of visible nervousness of Anna’s call for it has reached out to all victims of corruption.”
