After inaugurating the food security bill amid much fanfare, the Congress is going the extra mile to ensure voters know who brought the scheme to them.
To woo voters ahead of the Delhi assembly elections, Congress MLAs, ministers and even the chief minister would be seen outside fair price shops distributing subsidised foodgrains to people, sources said.
Termed as a ‘game changer’, the Delhi government had launched its ambitious food security scheme on August 20. Under the scheme, the city’s poor will get essential food commodities such as wheat and rice at low rates.
Sources said the distribution of subsidised foodgrains would start from the first week of September. “The chief minister is likely to inaugurate the foodgrain distribution at one of the fair price shops in her constituency. It is a big scheme and has to be promoted among the people. A number of other MLAs are also planning to carry out a similar exercise,” said a senior Delhi government official.
According to Delhi government officials, though foodgrain distribution will start early September at many places, the entire city would be covered only by the month-end. The food and supplies department has already started the process of issuing food security cards.
“The Opposition has been cornering the government over essential commodities becoming expensive and going out of people’s reach. This is probably why the government is ensuring that the scheme is properly marketed through different means,” said a source.
