An engineer from Hyderabad, who runs an education society, was arrested for allegedly raping and cheating a woman of Rs 2.5 lakh on the pretext of marrying her, police said on Wednesday.
32 year old Mohammad Sirajuddin Ahmed, who also organises cricket matches, landed into the trap laid by Delhi Police in the Andhra Pradesh capital last week and was arrested.
The arrest came on a complaint filed by Rita (name changed), a resident of Mehrauli in New Delhi, that Ahmed raped and cheated her of Rs 2.5 lakh on the pretext of marrying her after coming into contact with her through a matrimonial site.
The victim had no photograph of the alleged accused and she knew only his phone number and the address of his educational society.
A Delhi Police team went to Hyderabad to nab the accused but they found that the premises had was occupied by some other firm. Several efforts by the team to nab the accused failed but luck smiled on police in the form of an advertisement in papers for T-20 cricket matches to be held in six cities in South India with a phone number similar to that of the accused.
"A local SIM card and a person having local accent was arranged and a communication was made with accused by the team through that person as cricket team manager of three local cricket teams, who wants to take part in the tournament.
"Subsequently, the accused agreed to meet with the team. He was arrested when he came at designated place at 8.30 PM on September 10 near Osmania Women College, Koti, Hyderabad," Chhaya Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South District, said.
