After a brief respite, shoppers heading to Connaught Place will again face a harrowing time as the market will be dug up, one more time, for restoration work. The 75-year-old market will remain dug up till March 2012, which is the deadline for completion of the work. Motorists, too, will have to brace up for traffic jams as half of the carriageways will be cordoned off.

The civic body has finalised a plan in consultation with the New Delhi Traders’ Association (NDTA), that will now be sent to the traffic police for an approval. According to the civic body, work will start by the first week of December, after it gets a nod from the police.

However, in case there is a delay in starting the work due to approvals from the traffic police, the completion deadline will get further pushed to August 2012.

The restoration work includes construction of eight new subways in the Outer Circle, an underground tunnel in the Middle Circle, façade restoration work of Regal building, Scindia House and P block, which could not be completed before the Commonwealth Games (CWG).

This time around, the radial roads that connect the Outer Circle to the Middle Circle and the Middle Circle to Inner Circle will be dug up to connect the underground tunnel to each of the blocks.

Work on four radial roads will be taken up first. “Whichever radial road we will take up, we will cordon off half of its carriageway. That portion will not be available for either vehicular traffic or pedestrians. Once that part is completed, we will take up the remaining radial roads,” said a senior NDMC official.

In addition to this, the civic body will construct eight new subways in the Outer Circle but work on the four will start first. “We will start work on the Barakhamba Road and Panchkuian Road first,” added the official.

During the restoration work carried out before the Games, the civic agency had left out completion of the façade work in some blocks, which will be done now. “In Regal building, Scindia House and P block, we will carry out façade improvement work. We will be carrying out repairs too,” added the official.

NDTA members held a meeting on Tuesday to finalise the plan. “In the meeting, we were given information about the plan but it lacked detailing. Urban renewal is welcome but we don’t want the roads to be blocked for long,” said a NDTA member.
