The Delhi Police arrested four persons, who allegedly hypnotised senior citizens and duped them of crores of rupees.
According to the police, the alleged gang leader, Sonu Malik, used the alias of 'Rahul' to commit the crime. Malik had been evading the police for a long time and surrendered after investigators closed in on him.
The police said Malik's accomplices include a local politician, who was the member of the district panchayat. His associates, who helped him hide himself, were arrested in the last four months.
"Malik's favourite phrase while he hypnotised his victims was 'Tau ji Ram Ram. Main Rahul hoon aapne pahchana nahin?' (Ram ram, sir. I am Rahul, don't you recognise me?)," said KC Dwivedi, additional commissioner of police (east).
According to the police, by hypnotising and duping senior citizens, Malik had amassed crores in wealth and property.
The arrests came following an investigation into a complaint by Omparkash Khurana, who said two young boys hypnotised him and took away his gold bracelet and two gold rings.
Dwivedi said Malik's modus operandi revealed that two cheats roamed around in the NCR targeting rich persons mostly above 60 years wearing gold jewellery.
Then, one of them would stop the victim and tell him that because of his blessings, his business was doing well, Dwivedi said.
"Then by distracting the victim, one of the con men takes out the victim's jewellery and flee with his associate," the officer said.
The gang's other victims include retired IIT professor Arvind Kumar Jindal and retired assistant commissioner of police MM Chadha.
