At 1.30 am on Sunday, 30 minutes after Delhi Police told him to shut down his 'yoga camp', Baba Ramdev emerged on the stage at Ramlila Maidan clad in his trademark saffron robes.
He told his supporters to form a security wall to prevent police from coming towards him. As women, senior citizens and children formed a ring, Ramdev dived off the stage, only to emerge two-and-half hours later disguised as a woman in a white salwar-kameez and his faced hidden in a silver-coloured dupatta.
In those two-and-half hours, 5,000 police personnel and paramilitary forces had to fire tear gas and tackle angry supporters of Ramdev —estimated around 10,000 — while searching for the evasive yoga guru.
Ramdev was finally detained from outside the ground by the police at 4.15 am when he was trying to flee with two women from the camp. “We had an ambulance parked outside the ground when we saw three women, one of whom looked injured being helped by the other two. We asked them if we could take then to the hospital. Seeing us they started moving suspiciously. When we pulled the dupatta, it was Ramdev," said a senior Delhi police officer.
