Two Delhi police constables were shot at and three others beaten up by a group of youths in Bawana area of outer Delhi on Saturday night, in yet another incident of crime against men in uniform.
Five policemen on night patrol challenged a group of youths who opened fire.
The police said the youths were trying to steal metal scrap when two of the policemen saw them. "The incident was reported from Bawana Sector V around 2am. Om Prakash,
the head constable, and Mahender, a constable, saw few men breaking into a scrapyard. They called three more personnel who were nearby," a police officer said.
"They saw at least 15 persons and challenged them. Instead of surrendering, they opened fire and beat up the policemen with iron rods," BS Jaiswal, DCP (outer), said.
Seven of the youths were later arrested. "Emergency response vehicles and PCR vans along with teams from five police stations chased them and we managed to arrest seven of them," Jaiswal added.
Mahender and Prakash suffered bullet injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital where their condition was said to be stable.
The others were discharged after first aid.
According to the police, the gang was armed with pistols and iron rods. Prakash was hit by iron rods and he suffered multiple injuries.
The police returned fire but the gang managed to flee. Efforts were on to nab the remaining members of the gang. The police had recovered the stolen amount.
