Preliminary investigation into the sensational murder of a retired Delhi government official's son has hinted at the involvement of a notorious gang of Bangladeshi robbers.
Animesh Datta, son of Sumer Kumar Datta, retired director of prosecution, Delhi Government, was killed during a robbery at their house in Madhuban, east Delhi early Thursday morning.
A preliminary analysis of the modus operandi of the robbers suggests the crime was committed in the signature style of the Bangladeshi gang that mainly targets houses located near railway tracks.
"The Bangladeshi robbers strike in posh colonies in east and southeast Delhi. They seldom harm their target victims and they mostly attack in groups. They carry weapons like daggers, choppers or country-made pistols to scare the victims," said a senior investigating officer.
In Thursday's incident, the robbers, numbering around seven, entered the house after removing an iron grille of the drawing room window, Prabhakar, DCP (east), said.
The couple woke up but was overpowered by the robbers who tied their hands and legs. They told Datta and his wife, Prabha Datta, 65, that their intention was not to hurt them but to rob them.
"The couple kept quiet as they gang was armed with daggers and a country-made pistol. It was unfortunate that their only son, Animesh Datta, paid with his life. The robbers smothered him to death with his pillow when he resisted and tried to raise an alarm," the officer said.
Animesh, 32, was unmarried and unemployed. He was sleeping in his bedroom when a couple of the robbers, after tying his parents and ransacking their bedroom, entered his room. They killed him when he screamed and tried to resist him.
They fled with Rs 25,000 in cash and jewellery worth around Rs 2 lakh.
The couple later managed to untie themselves and went to Animesh's room and found him lying on the bed. They took him to hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
A case of dacoity was registered.
