If it were not so brutally true, the love story of Satyajeet and Sapna could well be equated with some dark Hollywood ripper.
A man loves a woman. So he agrees to kill the man who she claims raped her in office. The murder is committed with a friend’s help. The couple walks into the sunset, dreaming of a life full of love. But their dream is shattered and they are caught. And seven years later, they are convicted.
This is the story of Satyajeet and Sapna, who tied the knot after Satyajeet had fulfilled Sapna’s condition of killing the man who she claimed had raped her. They lived as a married couple for seven years, and then the law took them down.
On Monday, a city court sentenced them to life imprisonment for murder. Additional Sessions Judge P.S. Malik also ordered a similar punishment to Yunus, Satyajeet’s friend who had helped the couple in the crime.
The murder probe
Laxman Bajaj lodged a complaint at Vivek Vihar police station on July 13, 2002, stating that his brother Vijay had been missing for more than 24 hours. The police recovered Vijay’s bullet-ridden body from Dadri drain in Noida.
After investigations, police arrested Sapna, Satyajeet and Yunus. The police alleged Satyajeet had requested Vijay to arrange a job for his friend, Sapna, in his office.
“Sapna later told Satyajeet that she was drugged and raped by Vijay in the office. To take revenge, she persuaded Satyajeet to kill Vijay and told him it was the only way he could transform their love into marriage,” the police said. Later, Satyajeet in collusion with his friend Yunus kidnapped Shyam from the CBSE headquarters in Preet Vihar and drugged him in the car.
Satyajeet and Yunus took Vijay to a secluded location in Noida. Sapna was also with them. They tried to smother him to death inside the car but Vijay resisted and tried to overpower the three. He even managed to push Sapna. That was when Satyajeet shot him with a country-made pistol and dumped the body in Dadri drain.
Sapna kept her promise and married Satyajeet on August 1, 2002 — 17 days after the murder. The court noted that the prosecution had established the series of events leading to the murder and and sentenced the accused to life imprisonment.
