A city court has awarded a compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the family of an 18-year-old Delhi University (DU) student, who was crushed to death by a Blueline bus outside her college in November 2007.
As Pearl Gupta, a first-year student of Bachelor of Social Work at the Aditi Mahila College got off a bus, she was hit by a motorcycle.
When she fell down from the impact, a speeding Blueline bus ran over her.
Pearl lay on the road for over an hour. It was only when students and staff of the college informed the police, that she was rushed to a hospital. However, the Rohini resident was declared brought dead.
Suresh Gupta, Pearl's father, speaking to HT said, "Blueline buses should be removed from the city. These killer buses have claimed hundreds of lives and continue to do so. I have lost my daughter but I do not want others to lose their children."
Moreover, Pearl's parents have created a trust "Pearl Social Welfare and Education Society" in her memory.
They have also sought court direction to transfer the entire compensation amount in the name of the trust.

In their petition, the victim's parents had claimed that she had been earning R9,000 per month from private tuitions at the time of her death and had sought a compensation of Rs 27 lakh from the insurance company.
The killer bus was plying on route number 106, between Auchandi border and Azadpur. Police had registered a case under Section 304-A (causing death due to a rash and negligent act) of the Indian Penal Code in the case.
The driver of the bus, Mohammed Sherjahan, was arrested.
