The Delhi Police have identified the woman who was crushed by a speeding Mercedes-Benz convertible being driven by a city politician’s son last week.
The victim Meenakshi (27), alias Meenu, was identified after the police went through more than 130 pages of mobile phone logs and quizzed over 100 people.
A mother of three children, Meenakshi was a resident of the Wazirpur slums and was separated from her husband.
When the police located her one-room rented accommodation, they found the three children — the youngest being a two-year-old girl — without any food and water. Meenakshi’s eldest child is a 10-year-old girl, while her son is four years old.
“The children were unaware of their mother’s death. When we asked them, they said they did not know anything about her. The eldest daughter said their father had abandoned them five years ago,” said a senior police officer.
The children have been sent to a correction home.
“As it was a slum it was a difficult for us to identify her. We had to go from door to door with the photographs of the body and were finally able to find her landlord who identified her,” said the officer.
Police said the woman had taken a lift in the taxi that was hit by the car driven by Dinesh Singh Tanwar (26) on the Africa Avenue-Church Road T-point at 3.35 a.m. on Thursday morning. Dinesh is the son of Kanwar Singh Tanwar, Congress leader and the richest candidate to contest the 2008 Assembly polls.
Police said there were very few outgoing calls from the woman’s mobile phone, making her identification difficult.
“Most of the calls were incoming and when we called back on those numbers, the respondents feigned ignorance,” said the officer.
“The investigations are on in the case,” said H.G.S. Dhaliwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south).
