The crime branch has arrested a gang of five burglars and recovered cosmetics worth Rs 25 lakh from their possession.
Identified as Manoj Kumar, 30, Sunil Sahni, 28, Neeraj Kumar, 27, Amit Chaudhary, 35 and Hasmukh, 30, the gang operated in and around the storage warehouses of north and northwest Delhi, said Ravindra Yadav, additional commissioner of police (crime).
“We were investigating burglaries and thefts in north and northwest Delhi. We received a specific input on July 13 that the gang just burgled a godown of cosmetics at Burari,” said additional CP Yadav.
Immediately, raids were conducted at various hideouts in Jharoda and Burari villages, leading to the arrest of Manoj, Sunil Sahni, Neeraj Kumar and Amit Chaudhary.
The stolen cosmetics were recovered from their hideouts at their instance. The quantity of the stolen articles, such as expensive perfumes, deodorants, hair colour, lipsticks, shampoo and face creams, was so huge that they had to store the loot at different places.
“Interrogation revealed that Manoj, a resident of Burari, is the kingpin of the gang. He has a small counter retailing VCDs in the Lajpat Rai Market. He had searched for, and rented out, a godown that was situated at a lonely place and was in contact with some active criminals,” said Yadav.
“He would keep a watch over similar godowns where he could keep burgled articles and also used to give tips of godowns or shops where burglaries could be committed since he was very well acquainted with the area.”
Sahni, the police claimed, is trained in breaking locks. He and his associates would break open the lock, put their own lock on the door and hire tempos from the road side to transport the items to their hideouts.
The gang, the police claimed, would shift the burgled articles in different vehicles and different locations in batches. Then, Manoj would dispose of the stolen articles.
