The penultimate moment for Anna’s supporters came as Vilasrao Deshmukh brought in the much-awaited news, ending the deadlock between Anna and Parliament.
As Deshmukh read out the PM’s letter, a jubilant Team Anna and crowd broke into song and dance. The nationalistic fervour was completed with the national anthem. “This is only half the victory. But I will break my fast tomorrow at 10am. We have to go a long way to fight corruption,” said Anna Hazare.
“Members from different stratas of society stepped in to show Anna what they can offer,” said Akash Sharma, a volunteer. Celebration spilt over to those who had gathered on the streets as well, in places like Delhi Gate, India Gate, Daryaganj and ITO.
But despite Anna urging supporters to not indulge in any wrongdoing, bikers were seen zigzagging and halting traffic in the city to rejoice the anti-graft crusader’s victory.
On Saturday, the crowd at Ramlila Maidan progressed steadily with numbers. From the 30,000 supporters in morning, the numbers quickly went up to 50,000 as speculation of an end in deadlock quickly spread through the city.
