The Congress Working Committee will meet on Wednesday to prepare for the daylong AICC meeting on November 17 at Talkatora Stadium here, with Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi participating in the deliberations of the party’s highest decision making body for the first time.
Rahul, in his capacity as general secretary, is also a member of the CWC which will meet again on November 16 to clear the draft resolution that will be placed before the AICC delegates for ratification.
The AICC meeting will take stock of the national and international situation in the backdrop of the UPA-Left stalemate on the Indo-US nuclear deal which is likely to figure in the winter session of Parliament starting November 15, the forthcoming Assembly polls in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh and the developments in Pakistan.
With barely 17 months left for the Lok Sabha polls, if they are held on schedule in 2009, the prime focus of the meeting would be on taking on strengthening the organisation and propagating the Congress’s achievements to the people.
The Congress would start training programmes for its workers from the middle of the month and both the government and the party have begun to take stock of the implementation of the Common Minimum Programme, mainly in non-Congress states.
Sources said the AICC will come out with a comprehensive resolution on political, international and economic issues and congratulate Congress chief Sonia Gandhi for her initiative in ensuring that Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday is observed as International Non-Violence Day.
