The election commission has not yet decided the dates for the coming Lok Sabha elections. There is only a general understanding they will be held, in phases, in April-May.
The election commission spokesman said on Thursday, “The Commission has not yet discussed or decided any dates for the elections.” The EC was responding to reports in a section of the media that quoted one of the election commissioners, YS Quraishi, telling a group of journalists in London that election will be held between April 8 and May 15.
Quraishi dismissed those reports telling Hindustan Times, “there were no beans to be spilled by me,” referring to a report headlined he had let out the dates. All he said was that there was a window available from April to May.
And that, political analysts said, is no rocket science, as the next Lok Sabha must be in place before June 1. And elections cannot be held in March, as it is the month of exams. “Everyone knows that, understands that,” Quraishi said.
An election commission source said a series of meetings must be held before a decision is taken — with political parties, chief electoral officers of the states, their director generals of police and chief secretaries.
