Two incidents of snatching rocked the New Delhi District area in the last 24 hours.
In the first case of daylight robbery, two motorcycle-borne men snatched a bag containing Rs 4 lakh from a person in Connaught Place on Wednesday afternoon.
Police said today’s snatching was second in the last two days and fourth in last few days outside the same bank and at the same place. The police suspect that the same persons were behind the snatchings in the area. There are no police pickets on Kasturba Gandhi Marg, where the bank is situated.
Amit Aggarwal, a general manager of a private pharmaceutical company, had come to KG Marg branch of HDFC Bank to withdraw money around 1:30 in the afternoon. He was with a colleague and had reportedly withdrawn Rs 4 lakh and kept it in a bag.
“He was waiting for his officer car outside the bank around 1.45 pm when two men on a motorcycle snatched his bag and fled towards India Gate,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
Aggarwal immediately approached a traffic head constable standing nearby but the officer allegedly refused to chase them saying it wasn’t his job despite having a patrol motorcycle.
He then registered a case at Barakhamba police station.
The police said Rs 2 lakh were snatched from outside the same bank on Tuesday.
After the two incidents, the police are taking the matter seriously and they are looking at the CCTV camera footages of the nearby buildings to identify the snatchers.
In another incident on Tuesday morning, a union minister’s officer on special duty (OSD) was allegedly kidnapped by three men who robbed him of cash and mobile phone before dumping him near Teen Murti area of Chankaya Puri.
