Manju Pandey, the mother of 19-year-old Karan Pandey who died after a Delhi Police officer shot him while trying to stop stunt bikers, on Wednesday met Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi, who promised her justice.
Manju, who had been a single mother for over a decade, told the police chief that the man who killed her only child 11 days ago, continues to ‘roam free’. “He (Bassi) was very helpful and told me that his force was with me in letter and spirit. He said action will be taken in the coming days and that I will get justice,” Manju said.
On Wednesday, Manju was seen walking down the local street market alone, buying things required for his 13th day rituals.
Karan and his friend Puneet Sharma, both residents of south Delhi’s Khirki Village near Malviya Nagar, were allegedly among three dozen stunt bikers speeding across New Delhi on July 28 night.
“The pack had zoomed past a PCR van despite being told to halt. They had hurled stones at a PCR van when told to stop to stop again,” said a police officer.
Outnumbered and apparently left with no alternative, the inspector in charge took out his service revolver and fired at the rear tyre of the motorcycle the duo was riding. The shot was allegedly intended to hit the rear wheel but ended up striking Karan’s back. Sharma was also injured in the incident.
While Karan was declared dead at hospital, Sharma was discharged after treatment the next morning.
According to Delhi Police, any action against the accused inspector will follow after a magisterial enquiry was conducted.
On Wednesday, the Delhi government has finally issued an order for a magisterial inquiry into the incident. “The orders have come and we have asked the district magistrate to look into all aspects and submit a final report,” said Dharam Pal, divisional commissioner, Delhi government.
